What the students say

Wild Camp parent feedback 2023

Love the ‘back to basics’ break from hectic life for [my son]. Outdoor, no screen, lovely team around him. And for him to reconnect with friends he met previously.

Kim you are a legend!! [My daughter] absolutely loved today, she is soooo enjoying your class. It sounds amazing, we heard all about Liam!

I just wanted to thank you, [my son] absolutely loved the camp today and is begging me to book him in for a summer camp if you are having one!

I've never seen my daughter come home from a school holiday camp so happy - she came home beaming and can't wait for the next opportunity to go on one. She learnt loads about insects and moths, had time to play, and even got to see some baby badger footprints in the mud which she was so excited about. All round good fun!

My 8yr old daughter attended this camp organised by Dr Kim Polgreen for three days and she absolutely loved it. I am so grateful to the recommendation from one of the mums at my daughter’s school. Initially, I was a little concerned about the age range of 8-12 yrs but Kim highlighted the group sizing and supervision transparently. The programme looked and sounded very impressive.

My daughter really loved being with some of her friends and meeting new ones too. The staff members were exceptional – not just their teaching but their observations of the groups and kindness. They kept the groups busy with little downtime. My daughter participated in insect identification aided by an Entomologist; wood cutting, carving her grandmother a necklace from a tree branch; map reading; games; cooking and more. The 2hr hike on Day 2 was an ambitious plan but pulled off with ease by these camp maestros. My daughter slept like a bear that evening. Cooking in the camp was a real highlight. Everyday there was something delicious, stew, bread, doughnuts - bushtucker at its best. This is a woodland experience that I’m sure Bear Grylls would approve, in fact as the week progressed, I was surprised Kim didn’t wheel him out for a chat.

Trying to pick the best thing about this camp is really hard. We all know that there are numerous scientific studies that have delved into the benefits of exposing children to nature, the improved mood, creativity, concentration as well as the ability to problem-solve. For me I’d say the best thing was the inspiration and motivation, the sheer thrill and delight of my daughter’s face every morning jumping out of bed to get ready for camp matched only by the smiles on her parent’s faces. Kim and team are the best sort of woodland friends that everyone with kids really, really needs.  Thank you so much to Kim and the team.

From a group from London who had a weekend in Wytham Woods with us in October 2019

I wanted to say thank you for this amazing weekend. Wytham woods is a great place to spend time and clear the mind. I loved the environment because of the very caring and nice people around me. They helped us to learn more about the woods, trees, plants, bats and, all around, the biology of things in the woods. I am very happy that this trip was not just science and it was lots of activities together, for example, the poetry evening, which allowed us to be more creative. We had the opportunity to share our ideas with everybody. It was one of the best experience in my life. I would recommend it to every student who is having difficult times because of school and exams to go and try it by themselves. It will be a great chance to relax and learn in the nature. Ani

The Wytham Woods Weekend sleepover is a weekend full of exposure to the natural world away from City Life. The weekend gave me the opportunity to understand the relationship that humans have with the world in relation to our impact and carbon footprint, whilst also learning about a range of animals such as bats and undertsanding their existence. All in all the weekend was amazing. Joyce

Very enjoyable trip. Would’ve liked to know more in advance what we were going to do. Clelia. Sorry Clelia - it was a bit weather dependent!

The activities were really fun and educational at the same time. I particularly enjoyed the history of bats and seeing the bats. I would recommend this for anyone interested in studying geography or any sciences. I would also recommend this for people who care a lot about the climate. Manal

Bring snacks and have an open mind. Be ready to be exposed to new things. Marjan

2018 LIGC Summer School

The LIGC course made me think about life after high school. It opened my eyes to the chain of events that can happen as a result of climate change and that diseases or conditions aren’t always as simple as “issue-cause-solution”. The presentation skills session we had with Jenni were particularly useful for MUN. What I loved most about the experience is how people with such varied backgrounds and contrasting views on things can connect, debate and stay in contact after a whole year, with equal enthusiasm as they had at the beginning. I wish we could do the whole week again this year! Megan

Leader In Global Change: an Oxford based course developing the skills to become to leaders of #globaljustice. If you ever get tired of fighting prejudice and hate coming from climate change deniers, join #LIGCOxford Marin

I really liked punting, the theatre and lessons with James Painter. Anon

I liked the Ellen MacArthur Foundation session, scientist interviews and [making] videos and posters on climate change. Anon

Everything was good! Everything was perfect. Anon

I liked the climate change lessons. I’ve learn a lot from the courses. For example solutions for climate change, how we can prevent climate change etc. I liked Doughnut economy lessons . A new thing for me, but I’ve enjoyed it also I’ve learn alot. For examples, how can environmental things can change a country economy. I liked plastic lessons. Now I know how plastic is big of a deal in the world. Very dangerous. I liked interviewing scientists. I took an introduction as how scientist work and what they do, which is quite hard and important thing in the same time. I liked circular economy. I learned a lot of how the recycling process work, solutions for recycing etc. I liked going to Wytham Woods. A new thing kind of a activity I enjoyed it alot.

Just got to dig out the rest from the archives!

2017 LIGC Summer School

The different interventions we had from the professors were really interesting. It was great to learn from specialists. Being able to go explore oxford after the classes was super interesting. Jade

The course was amazing as it was an opportunity to discuss very complex issues with people my age and from experts. I particularly like the talks with experts where we were able to act like journalists. I never felt any pressure. It was enjoyable 100% of the time. Very dynamic course. Always switching from interactive activities to quiet work to team work. Anon

I liked the experts that came in and talked about their knowledge and professionalism. I learned so much from each and every one of them. I absolutely loved the staff. In becoming a leader in this course was so helpful. I am grateful for the staff to have been so kind and not judge - mental to feel comfortable and for them to listen to us. Anon

I liked having really skilled people come to speak to us. I liked the activities we did, enable us to work as a team and also individually. The group size was good, made everyone really social. Anon

I liked how all the talks were related and connected and how everything started with a short presentation of the topic and then the key speaker. And how long the breaks and lunch were. I also liked how all had to interact at some point with one another, and to listen to each other’s ideas and thoughts and get an intel from their country. I really liked the diversity. Anon.

I liked having specialists coming in to explain the different issues we looked at during the week. It was really interesting to listen to people from different backgrounds share their experiences with leadership and issues like climate change. Anon

What went best of all was the massive support and respect evveryone shared with everyone. At no point during the entire course did i feel like i was being judged or made fun of. This is a great sign becuase if we can keep our attitudes like this, it can only mean improvement for the environment too. I think the key point i learned from LIGC on the environmental topic that one’s mindset is the no.1 determinant of the future of the planet. Batu.

The part of the course that i most enjoyed was when Rosanna cam and taught us how to give a speech. It was very helpful to understand different techniques on how to communicate more effectively. Another thing I really enjoyed was the journalism part of the course when we had come up with questions to ask to the experts. Anon

I liked the variety of topics and the ways of teaching!! Anon
